Half-Day Hikes

Ragged Mountain Natural Area

A peaceful, forested trail system that circles a reservoir on the western edge of Charlottesville. Ragged Mountain is particularly beloved by birdwatchers and those who just want a quiet walk in beautiful woodland. The reservoir views are lovely, and you’re unlikely to run into big crowds. Shorter out-and-back options make it accessible for all fitness levels.

Patricia Ann Byrom Forest Preserve

A hidden gem right on the edge of Crozet, the Byrom Forest Preserve offers a network of trails through hardwood forest, along streams, and up to scenic overlooks. The flexibility is the appeal here — you can do a quick 1-mile loop or a proper 7-mile adventure through the woods. A great destination if you want to feel genuinely immersed in nature without driving far.

Sugar Hollow – Blue Hole

This is one of our personal favorites. The trail follows the Moormans River through shaded forest with fun creek crossings along the way, finishing at a beautiful natural swimming hole surrounded by rock faces. It’s a genuine adventure without being overly demanding. Bring water shoes — you’ll want them for the creek crossings, and possibly the swim at the end. A fantastic warm-weather hike
